Beginning the Project
Welcome to my Tribes Project page! I hope you enjoyed the performance that we had Monday night on 9/28/15!
On this project, we mainly focused on belonging. We read this book called The Absolutely True Diary of A Part Time Indian, (Shortened to ATDPTI or Diary for your convenience.
To further elaborate on belonging, we had to, over the course of reading this book, try and connect with Junior (The main character of the book) and his experiences. He is a Freshman at Wellpinit which is off his reservation, so not only is he separated from his only friend, he's also separated from all his kind, and he had to find out where he belonged.

From the beginning...
Afterward....
We interviewed a partner randomly selected, and had to describe our lives to them.
Describing our lives consisted of just talking. We had forty minutes with each other, and after this forty minutes, we had to then write a poem about them.
This poem was supposed to be our first major writing this year, and it was used to gauge our ability in using adjectives, and language to improve a story or any form of writing.

The First Draft
My partner's Critique
I did not receive any critique from my partner.
The Middle Schooler's Critique.
In order to further improve our first draft and other student's first drafts, we went next door to the middle school, and critiqued eighth graders work, while they critiqued ours.
What they did was read over the work, and come back to us on how to improve the work, while we did the same to them.

The Final Draft
The Critique I made for me
The critique I made for myself consisted around trying to make the sound of the poem be more dramatic, more interesting to the reader.
I tried to focus on David as a person, because that's what I would want for me. I always try to be as personal but open as possible in my writing, because I think that the personality of the writer can be seen in their writing, as that's where they can write without judgement.

The Self Portraits
I chose this image here because the poem written about me is talking about how I'm friends of many, so I put a picture of a friend and I. However, I edited the photo so that it blurs him out, and leaves it on me, so that the viewer could focus in on me, as that's who the picture and poem talk about.
I chose this pose because the poem also spoke about my happiness when I'm young, and I believe this image shows it |
What I did
For the performance, I was in charge of making sure all the lights were working, and making sure all the performers got their preferred lighting, such as dimming the lights on certain parts, and intensifying the lights on other parts.
I had to go through memorizing each individual light's settings and tuning it to each performer. I had control of 24 lights, each with their own settings that I had to tweak and fix. I had memorized all the performances and light settings in under a week.

Reflection
I belong to several tribes. Too many to count. So many in fact that if I were to list them all, they would overflow this page.
At the beginning of the year, I first answered "I belong to the tribe of me." and was secluded. Throughout the project, we continued to realize what tribes actually mean to us as a person.
What I learned about writing for someone is you should really get to KNOW the person, because when you get to know the person, you know what they like to read, and then you can write about that and mold it around them.
I didn't really learn anything about descriptive writer. I simply used skills I already knew from before with a bit of more flair and touch to my writing, making it more dramatic.
What I learned from collaboration was to always check in often and throughout the entire project, because you never know what will happen.
I want to remember Lily's performance, as it was, for me, the most dramatic and great performance of the night. I feel that is also where my lights shined the most.
